What Is a PIN Code?

A PIN code, short for Postal Index Number, is a six-digit numerical code used within the Indian Postal system. This unique code is typically found at the end of addresses in India. Given the vastness of India, with its numerous villages, towns, and cities, the Indian Postal Service faces the challenge of efficiently delivering parcels and letters to the correct destinations. To streamline this process, India Post has implemented the six-digit PIN code system.

India is divided into nine distinct PIN code regions, with eight of them corresponding to geographical regions and the ninth region reserved for the Indian Army.

History of PIN Codes:

The introduction of the PIN code system dates back to 15 August 1972 when Shriram Bhikaji, then the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Communications, recognized the need for simplifying the manual sorting and delivery of mail. The existing system was plagued by confusion caused by different languages and similar names and addresses. To address this issue, a standardized procedure was imperative. Consequently, PIN codes were introduced to uniquely identify states, districts, and cities.”
